The United Nations called on India and Pakistan to exercise maximum restraint after two days of escalating tensions between the two countries, Cairo News Channel reported. A Pakistani official said an exchange of fire took place overnight along the border with India, while Indian sources said they responded to Pakistani fire along the Line of Control in Kashmir. The Pakistani Foreign Ministry announced that its armed forces would remain ready to defend against any reckless attempt, and that the Indian mission in Islamabad would be reduced to 30 staff. It would consider all visas for Indian citizens voided and that they must leave the country within 48 hours. Pakistan affirmed its commitment to peace but would not allow anyone to violate its sovereignty and rights. The Foreign Ministry added: "We will not allow any infringement on our sovereignty and security and will close our airspace to all Indian aircraft," noting that Indian defense advisors are not welcome and must leave the country within 48 hours. India closed a major land crossing with Pakistan, abrogated a water-sharing treaty, and barred Pakistani citizens from entering the country under its visa waiver program following Tuesday's militant attack in Kashmir that killed 26 tourists.
